Today, Energy Saving Cat will introduce the classifications of UPS uninterruptible power supplies to help you make an initial choice when selecting a UPS.

First, let’s explain what a UPS power supply is.

As an important peripheral in data centers, the UPS power supply plays a critical role in protecting data, maintaining stable grid voltage and frequency, improving power quality, and preventing damage caused by instantaneous power outages or accidental failures. UPS systems have evolved from the rotating generators of the 1960s to today’s intelligent static all-electronic circuits, and they continue to develop.

Currently, UPS power supplies generally refer to static UPS. Based on their operating mode, UPS power supplies can be divided into three main types: standby (offline), line-interactive, and online. Let’s take a closer look at each.

1. Standby (Offline) UPS

When utility power is available, a standby UPS only regulates the voltage. The inverter remains in standby mode and does not operate. When the utility power becomes abnormal, the standby UPS quickly switches to inverter mode, converting battery power into AC power to continue supplying the load. Because of this switching process, there is a transfer time (typically less than 10 milliseconds) when the UPS switches from utility to inverter operation. This makes standby UPS unsuitable for critical power applications. In addition, standby UPS units typically provide backup power for only a few minutes to around ten minutes. In terms of working principle, the advantages of a standby UPS include high operating efficiency, low noise, and relatively low cost. They are best suited for locations with minor power fluctuations and where power quality requirements are not extremely high.

2. Line-Interactive UPS

In a line-interactive UPS, utility power is directly supplied to the load. The inverter operates in reverse to charge the battery bank. When the utility voltage is too low or too high, the UPS regulates it through an internal voltage regulation circuit before output. When the utility power becomes abnormal, the inverter immediately starts inverting mode, converting battery voltage into AC power for output. Therefore, a line-interactive UPS also has a transfer time. Compared to a standby UPS, the line-interactive UPS offers stronger power conditioning, a wider input voltage range, low noise, and a compact size, but it still has a switching time. The inverter output waveform is generally good, typically a sine wave. Its greatest advantage is strong software functionality, enabling convenient network-based remote control and intelligent management of the UPS.

3. Online UPS

In an online UPS, utility power passes through filtering and surge absorption circuits and then splits into two paths. One path goes to the battery charger to charge the battery bank. The other path goes through a rectifier circuit to serve as input to the inverter, which then provides purified AC power to the load. If a utility power abnormality occurs, the inverter’s input switches to the battery bank, and the inverter continues to supply power, achieving zero transfer time. When utility power is normal, the online UPS still supplies power entirely through the inverter. The online UPS features a very wide input voltage range, no transfer time, and high output voltage stability. Regardless of the quality of the utility power, the output is always stable, clean sine wave power. This type is especially suitable for applications with high power quality requirements, but it comes at a higher cost.

Conclusion

The UPS uninterruptible power supplies commonly used today generally fall into these three categories. The choice depends on the specific application scenario and budget. If you have UPS power supply needs, please feel free to contact us directly.
